PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS AND TOLERANCES

As well as being appropriate to the desired level of serviceability of the road, the standards and tolerances set for paving materials and construction must be able to be achieved in practice, at an acceptable cost. To make an objective assessment of specification requirements, factual data is required from completed works. This paper discusses standards proposed for surface texture and ride-ability in relation to those achieved on recently constructed highway projects. Level measurements taken during the construction of a freeway pavement have been analysed and compared with the dimensional tolerances specified. The paving plant, construction techniques and the compaction and level control used on this project are also outlined. The discussions and conclusions apply to roads which are designed to carry heavy high speed traffic. /TRRL/
