STABILITY OF SLOPES UNDER FOUNDATION LOAD

This paper presents a stability analysis for a uniform surcharge at ground level near the edge of a slope, using the friction-circle method. It assumes the soil is anisotropic, as defined by the ratio of cohesion in the vertical and horizontal directions, and nonhomogeneous, as defined by a linear increase of cohesion with depth. An intricate expression is obtained for the Taylor stability number, defined for a factor of safety, with the slope height and vertical cohesion at the surface, directly simplified for phi = 0. Assuming the surcharge q = 0 authors reduced the expression to that, given by K. Y. Lo (1965). Values of the stability number are represented as a function of slope angle ratio k of vertical and horizontal cohesion; relative increase of cohesion with depth; relative width of surcharge B/H, and relative surcharge. The relative distance of the surcharge to the slope edge b/H is considered in the analysis but assumed zero in the computaitons. Graphs show that the stability number varies directly as the relative increase of cohesion with depth, and inversely as the relative surcharge, ratio k or B/H. Values of the stability number, computed directly for k=1, phi=0, relative increase of cohesion with depth =0, are closely in agreement with Jambu's (1954) in the case of surcharge on the whole top of slope, but values of bearing capacity, derived from the stability number for B/H = 0.25 are higher, as expected, than those obtained by Meyerhof (1957) for a surcharge of infinite width.
