CHANGE IN UNDRAINED SHEAR STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS OF SATURATED REMOLDED CLAY DUE TO SWELLING
Authors performed large numbers of laboratory tests on three saturated remolded clays in order to establish the relations between undrained shear strength, coefficient of earth pressure at rest, and pore water pressure coefficient at failure for a given overconsolidation ratio. Investigations showed a logarithmic dependence between the ratio of the undrained shear strength to the vertical effective stress after complete swelling on one side and the overconsolidation ratio on the other side. Based on experimental data authors propose a method to evaluate the undrained shear strength in field conditions by extrapolating the results of some simple laboratory tests, taking into account the overconsolidation stage. The method is suitable for relatively homogeneous clay deposits characterized by a mere history and an overconsolidation ratio less than 10. /Author/
