THE AV - COLBOND VERTICAL DRAINAGE SYSTEM
The system, developed in the Netherlands, ensures that 80 per cent of the total settlement of fill on cohesive layers is attained within a few months. A vertical drain has been produced in which traditional sand columns or paper drains have been replaced by colbond polyester non-woven fabric in 30 cm diameter strips. The article describes the development, construction and method of insertion of the drain. Apparatus used in extensive laboratory tests to determine the best non-woven material are illustrated. The laboratory investigations included the effect on permeability of the compression of the fabric, its fatigue loading and the nature of the water. A full scale trial was conducted in 1973 where the performance of three different types of av-colbond 30 cm wide drains was compared over a period of 500 days with that of conventional sand drains. Details are given showing that the colbond type of drain was equally as effective in shortening the period of consolidation. A further series of trials is being conducted on a national highway near Rotterdam. The colbond wick is very robust having a water collecting perimeter of 60 cm. /TRRL/
