THE OPTIMUM DESIGN OF STIFFENED PANELS SUBJECT TO COMPRESSION LOADING

This paper deals with the optimum design of stiffened panels of the type found in the bottom flange of box girder bridges. Two approaches to optimizing designs are discussed. The first of these makes use of mathematical programming techniques, and the second is the fully stressed design approach. Design studies are also described in which the efficiency of several types of stiffeners is examined, and the results of sensitivity analyses reported. The analyses concerned with the effect of imperfections in the panels provide useful data on the levels at which design and fabrication tolerances should be set.(a) /TRRL/
