SKID TRAINING - A REQUIREMENT FOR DRIVING LICENCES

HALKOEVNINGSBANOR - ETT KRAV VID KOERKORTSUTBILDNING

The ability to drive on low-friction surfaces and to correct a skid is considered essential from the traffic safety standpoint. The Swedish Road Safety Office runs four skid tracks, where driving test entrants for cars and light lorries must pass a 3-4 hour skid training course. The tracks are also open to other drivers. Training comprises, on rough and slippery surfaces, braking, an obstacle course, evasive action, and correction of skid. Tracks must be in use at all times, and an artificially slippery surface is therefore necessary. Methods used are: (1) maintenance of a film of water on surfacings of hard tar emulsion, rounded pebbles and tar epoxy. Coefficients of friction of 0.12-0.30 have been obtained. Running costs are low but first costs of spray and recycling installation, filters etc are high. (2) emulsions which act as lubricant between carriageway and tyre. Emulsions tend to become viscous when cold, while too much emulsion makes the surface too slippery. Coefficients down to 0.1 have been obtained. Running costs are quite high. Usual design of track comprises a straight section and a curved skid section. /TRRL/
