LIGHTING COLUMNS AND TRAFFIC SAFETY
STOLPAR OCH TRAFIKSAEKERHET
The bottom section of street light columns is usually in the range 108-366 mm, and there is a tendency for this dimension to increase as columns are made higher and the top cantilevers longer. This is a cause of serious injuries in the event of collisions, and flexible column constructions have therefore been developed to counteract this. Types employed are: (1) columns of folded sheeting reinforced with steel bars; (2) square or triangular section lattice columns of round bars; and, (3) ordinary steel columns with a slip base joint. In positioning columns, safety considerations and provision for snow clearance must be taken into account. At road junctions, special considerations apply, one of which is that lighting at a junction must be different from that on the roads leading to it, so as to give better visual information. /TRRL/
