DEVELOPMENT OF CUMULATIVE NOISE MEASURE FOR THE PREDICTION OF GENERAL ANNOYANCE IN AN AVERAGE POPULATION

This paper describes a laboratory investigation into the concept of using a unified index for the prediction of annoyance from aircraft and traffic noise heard over periods of time. Cumulative noise indices which were significantly better than nef (noise exposure forecast) for aircraft and l10 (18-hour) (db(a)) for traffic were not found, although the accuracy of neither of these was significantly different from leq (equivalent continuous sound level) (db(a)). The concept of noise pollution level was not substantiated. However it was found that at equal leq levels traffic noise was reported to be significantly more difficult to live with than aircraft noise. Therefore the use of the normalized leq as a unifying index was not substantiated, and should not be used in this context unless further corrections are incorporated in order to allow for between source differences. /TRRL/
