A METHOD FOR THE DESIGN OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS

UN METODO DI PROGETTAZIONE DELLE SOVRASTRUTTURE FLESSBILI

A method is presented for the design of flexible pavements in terms of the type and amount of envisaged traffic, the nature and bearing capacity of the subgrade, the expected life of the pavement, and the physical characteristics and cost of the materials used in the surfacing, base and subbase. The procedure for determining the necessary design parameters is illustrated, the criteria for the evaluation of the traffic factor being based upon the characteristics of the Italian road network. Some design charts are presented from which the optimum thickness of each pavement layer may be derived. As an example the design method is applied to the case of a single base layer, and a double base layer specification. /TRRL/
