SOME PROBLEMS ON POROUS ASPHALT IN JAPAN
This report on present developments in porous asphalt in Japan lists the merits and problems associated with this type of asphalt and discusses the use of porous asphalt for pedestrianways in Tokyo. These footways consist of 4 cm thick porous asphalt surface course, a 10-20 cm thickness of crushed stone base course, and 5 cm of sand layer as a cut-off layer. The maximum aggregate size, the aggregate gradation, and the durability and stripping of binder are briefly discussed. The problems noted here are associated with the following areas: structural voids to prevent surface runoff; the necessity for the improvement of asphalt by means of blending of rubber on resin or by addition of anti-oxidation or anti-stripping agents; new road maintenance procedure to prevnt the filling of voids by dust; the freezing and thawing of pavements in regions with snowfall.
