POROUS ASPHALT SURFACINGS (SOUTH AFRICAN EXPERIENCE)
The effect of binder type, binder content, aggregate type and aggregate grading on the durability of hot-mix asphalt surfacings in the highveld climatic region of South Africa was investigated. It was found that with open graded (porous) asphalt surfacings, the durability was dependent on the type of binder used; tar gave the poorest performance and 200 pen (hardest grade tested) petroleum bitumen gave the best performance. The sections with 200 pen petroleum bitumen were in very good condition with a slight loss of aggregate after 11 years of service. The binder content range for good performance was not critical and varied from 4.5 to 7.5% by mass of aggregate. The best results were obtained with quartzite aggregate and poorest results with dolomite aggregate. The results are also presented of aggregate pradings of the open graded surfacings laid, and general comments are made on mixtures in which binder contents varied between 4.5 to 6.5% by mass of total mix.
