FRICTION COURSE TRAILS WITH MODIFIED BINDERS

Trials have been carried out with 10 mm friction courses using modified binders in order to see whether the stiffer binders would reduce the tendency for compaction under traffic or would permit the use of more open gradings. Trials on a heavily trafficked road indicated that any move towards stiffer binders either by the use of harder grades, higher penetration index or the addition of rubber or polymers was likely to be dangerous in this type of open mix, although such modifications could be effective in dense graded mixes. It was concluded that modification of grading or binder (of the type described) is unlikely to improve the performance of the standard friction course significantly. Trials with an epoxy/bitumen binder at a second location suggested that in spite of its greater cost the epoxy-based friction course should be justified in terms of longer life and improved performance. In trials with the fuel resistant epoxy friction course at Gatwick Airport, the underlying asphalt was also protected: an epoxy/bitumen tack coat was used in place of the usual bitumen emulsion.
