LABORATORY RESEARCH INTO POROUS ASPHALT
Design methods for porous asphalt mixtures are outlined, the mechanical characteristics and durability are described, and the effect of modified binders is discussed. A method is outlined which consists of preparing a trial mixture in the asphalt mixing plant preliminary to each production. These mixtures are visually estimated for even coating and drainage and segregation of the mastic from the aggregate. This approach in some cases leads to a correction for bitumen content. The extensive research program relating to Marshall stability, flow and quotient, the Braxillian splitting test, immersion wheel-tracking test, and fretting test are outlined. The results are also given of tests on two modified binders: Bitumen 180/200 + 10% Serfax AK 2500 (polybutene type); and special bitumen (grade 180/200) + 7% Cariflex TR1101. Mixtures with modified binders appear to have better performance.
