PREDICTING THE PERFORMANCE ON POLYURETHANES
Dynamic testing of low-durometer resins were conducted to determine the variables in resins and vulcanizates, and to examine ways of avoiding melting roller coverings during flexing at high speeds. A urethane roll tester consisting of three 2-in. dia. Steel rollers was used in the experiment. Test results indicated that the roll tester was unable to evaluate very hard compounds for the industrial tire market. Tire testing equipment capable of evaluating full-sized wheels was developed as an alternative. The machine is capable of measuring dynamic deflection, rolling resistance, and "tire to failure" under varying conditions of load and tire speed. The tire tester, as designed, is able to test industrial solid tires at loads up to 10,000 lbs., and speeds to 10 mph. The use of an adapter for testing plugs was found to be useful for screening a large number of experimental compounds where quantities of the resin were limited. Test results of the new polyurethane compound against the best polyester urethane compound proved that it was comparable in dynamic deflection and rolling resistance to the best polyester based urethane. The use of equipment such as the tire test apparatus will help in the development of inproved urethane resins for the industrial tire market.
