THE USE OF FUTURES ANALYSIS FOR TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH PLANNING
This paper is based on the results of a specific study undertaken at the Center for Future Research at the University of Southern California (USC) sponsored by the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS). CALTRANS begin work in 1973 on a statewide multimodal transportation plan to be presented to the Legislature by January 1, 1976. Early in its work, CALTRANS recognized that, since this plan can affect the course of transportation in California beyond the year 2000, the planning effort would have to be undertaken in the context of the future of the State. It was to provide this needed context that CALTRANS turned to USC. /GMRL/
