EXACT DETERMINATION OF TURNING CIRCLES

Following the IMCO recommendation that manoeuvring data applicable to the ship should always be available on the bridge, in 1972 the East German authorities issued a corresponding regulation. After briefly discussig the importance of this manoeuvring information, the Author, of the Seekammer der DDR, the East German maritime board, states that in a few cases the manoeuvring tables handed over to his office after an accident have shown discrepancies that have thrown doubt on the accuracy of the data. This applies especially to turning-circle data, and shipmasters are accordingly recommended to check the correctness of their shipboard manoeuvring tables, and in particular the correctness of the turning-circle diameter. Much of the article consists of an explanation of how such a check on the turning-circle diameter can be carried out to sea. The Author has described, in an earlier article, how checks on manoeuvring data can be performed (in certain areas of the Baltic) with Decca Equipment. Other precedures can be used, and the present article is mostly concerned with a method based on radar. The procedure is explained in some detail, together with some general discussion on turning manoeuvres and collision avoidance.
