STUDY OF THE INTERDEPENDENCE BETWEEN HOUSING AND TRANSPORTATION IN CITIES
To illustrate the main principles of the optimization procedure for city building, a model for building new towns has been constructed. The problem to be solved is formulated as follows: for a given population, a given demand for residence space and number of commuting trips per household find the transportation system, the city form and the population distribution that will minimize total housing and transportation costs. The model is an iterative optimization computer procedure. First a transportation system layout is assumed. Then the initial problem can be simplified to find values of the parameters in the exponential population density function such that total housing and transportation costs are minimized. The next step is to assume another transportation system layout and repeat the optimization. This optimization procedure can be repeated for different transportation system layouts. The minimized total costs found from each conditional optimization are compared. The lowest value represents the solution. Numerical results are presented for city populations of 10000, 100000 and 1000000. Conclusions drawn were that housing and transportation costs per capita tend to increase with city population and that cars would play a minor role in an efficient urban transportation system designed for commuting only.
