EFFECTIVE STRESS METHODS OF CALCULATING SKIN FRICTION ON DRIVEN PILES IN SOFT CLAY
The method presented is based on considerations of stress conditions in the soil immediately adjacent to the pile when the pile is at the point of failure. It is necessary to make a simple assumption regarding the stress conditions in order to predict a value of skin friction. The implications of varying this assumption are discussed and both drained and undrained conditions can be encompassed within the predictions. Comparisons are made between predicted and published values. The likelihood of different values of skin friction for upward and downward loading of a pile is discussed and a link is established between effective stress and total stress methods of calculating skin friction. /TRRL/
