A PECULIARITY OF RAILWAY SIGNALLING: THE OVERLAP
UNE PARTICULARITE DE LA SIGNALISATION FERROVIAIRE: L'OVERLAP
After giving a concise historical background to railway signalling, the author defines overlap and the different ways of achieving it in practice; with the automatic block, the overlap involves there being a protective zone down the line from each block signal and this effects the block signal control for the section immediately up the line. The author then refers to uses of overlap on the metropolitan railways in London, Paris, Munich, Nuremberg and discusses the purpose of the system.
