IS THERE A TREND TOWARDS HIGHER EDUCATION FOR SEAFARERS?

The general education system is changing rapidly and consequently the problems facing the recruitment and training personnel of shipping companies are also continually changing. The trend is towards a broader based education and more and more applicants are coming forward with GCE 'O' levels in SMP (modern) Maths, SCISP (Schools Council Intergrated Science Project), Nuffield physics, etc., etc., most of these are the products of comprehensive education and we are now also faced with CEE (Certificate of Extended Education). It is not the purpose of this article to discuss the pros and cons of the various "educational experiments" presently being conducted, but merely to draw attention to the radical changes in the state education system.
