FALSEWORK

The technical and procedural problems associated with temporary works are highlighted with reference to recent collapses. The responsibilities of all parties involved are defined and a recommended delineation of duties suitable for inclusion in a code of practice is presented. Results of the analyses of two ground supported bridge falseworks are discussed. The magnitude of redistribution of the gravity load from the superstructure caused by differential temperature and prestress, and the sensitivity of the analysis results to foundation stiffness are indicated. Recommendations are made for the design and detailing of falseworks incorporating tubular scaffolding or proprietary frames. Special emphasis is placed on detailing of members to ensure stability under horizontal loads. (A) /TRRL/
