DEVELOPMENT OF THE SUPERPORT AND THE OIL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX AT WILHELMSHAVEN, WEST GERMANY
This article recalls the early history of Ostfriesland and the role of the German Navy in the establishment of Wilhelmshaven. Since World War 2 it is the oil industry that has primarily shaped the development of the area. The paper reviews at length the dredging of the Jade to become a port for 250,000 dwt tankers; the most extensive ever reclamation works undertaken along the German North Sea coast; and large projects under way involving oil, chemicals, power and gas. Vast schemes for underground storage of crude oil are also now in hand.
