VERTICAL DRAINS FOR HIGHWAY EMBANKMENTS IN KANSAS (ABRIDGEMENT)

This article discusses details of an embankment slide that occured in a fill on the first section of Interstate pavement completed in the nation. The fill conditions were determined by direct observation, aerial and ground photographs, vertical boreholes, and horizontal drilling. The use of vertical drains as a corrective measure are described. Water inducement via the holes in the median was investigated through dye tracer studies and the results verified that remote surface water was entering the layer of limestone blocks through rodent burrows. The determinental effects of rodents in establishing, enlarging and maintaining natural holes and cracks should not be overlooked. It is hoped that vertical drains, trees and shrubs will continue to remove the water and maintain a stable slope.
