PREDICTING PILE CAPACITIES USING DUTCH CONE PENETROMETER DATA (ABRIDGEMENT)

The equipment and the field problems associated with the Dutch cone penetrometer are discussed, the modification of the pressure measuring equipment used with the penetrometer is outlined, and the interpretation of the penetrometer data is discussed. An 89/kN (10 ton) capacity model mounted on a trailer, and a drilling unit mounted on a swamp buggy which was modified to make penetrometer soundings were used in Mississippi. It was found that thin rock layers and boulders possess extremely high point bearings and can stop the sounding. Problems are noted with very dense thin sand layers (because of the point-size), soundings in sands in which the standard penetration is consistently above 60, and soundings in gravel formations. The typical output sheet of sounding data is shown and discussed, and the reduction of the penetrometer data for a complete sounding is described. Comments are made on piles loaded to failure, and the development of relationships (based on soil type and soil conditions) for skin friction and point bearing. The study concludes that the Dutch cone penetrometer can be used to predict pile capacities with accuracy. The pile capacities calculated using raw cone penetrometer data are 2 and 7 times the actual measured capacities.
