PREDICTION OF THE GENERALIZED RESPONSE OF A SHIP HULL GIRDER TO SLAMMING

The objective of this investigation, performed under the American Bureau of Shipping Research program, was to find a consistent response "function" which will give the response of a ship to a slamming load and which can be used in the preliminary design stage. Using the computer simulation technique and the SHVRS computer program, a parametric analysis was performed. The computer outputs were then analyzed using such various concepts as the relative stiffness, non-dimensional stiffness, non-dimensional vibration period and non-dimensional bending moments. It turned out that plots of the form max stress/peak force vs. slam duration/ship vibration period, are the most consistent, and so these are the most suitable response "functions" for future use, at least for the present. The parametric analysis was done using three different ships, a bulk carrier, a Great Lakes ore carrier and a super tanker, varying the slam duration as well as the ship stiffnesses.
