THE SEABORNE TRANSPORTATION OF LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS 1977-1985: TRADES, COSTS, AND REVENUES
Analyzes the seaborne transportation of LNG as follows: LNG exporting and importing areas and countries are indicated with some brief notes on the trades, participants and shipping requirments. The firm supply of LNG carriers 1977-85, based on the existing fleet and scheduled future deliveries is indicated. The firm demand for LNG carriers 1977-85 arising from existing export trades and known firm plans for future trades is assessed. A comparison is made of the firm supply/demand balance for LNG carriers up to 1985. The LNG shipping costs associated with these firm trades are discussed including a split between capital, voyage and operating costs. The revenues that LNG ships can expect to earn from these firm trades are detailed on the basis of reported freight elements in delivered LNG prices. A cost/revenue comparison is made for LNG carriers operating on firm trades and the relationship between LNG transportation costs/voyage distances and FOB LNG realisations is discussed. The future potential demand for natural gas in the main consuming areas (Europe, the US and Japan) is estimated for the period up to 1985 and contrasted with the likely availability of supplies from indigenous production and via pipelines, and firm LNG importation projects. Any shortfall indicated by this analysis can be seen as a potential demand for new LNG supplies. Potential supplies of LNG, over and above the firm supplies already analysed, are discussed and compared with demand indicated above to show a potential future trade pattern. Finally, potential future trades are converted into an LNG carrier requirement which can be contrasted with the supply/demand balance identified from the earlier analysis of firm trades to indicate an additional LNG carrier requirement. Throughout this Survey, methodology and assumptions are detailed and the sensitivity of the forecasts to changes in certain critical variables, particularly cost and revenue factors, is emphasised. The text is accompanied by the numerous tables, graphs and trade matrices that HPD clients have come to expect in a Survey, and the cost and revenue data is displayed in detail. Finally, a series of appendices contain the statistical base of the report: The entire LNG carrier fleet, both existing and on order is listed. Details are presented of all firm and potential LNG export projects up to 1985. Survey terminology, methodology and conversion factors are given.
