RESPONSE AND RADIATION OF STRUCTURES IN AN IRREGULAR SEAWAY

A general analytic technique for the study of ocean wave structure interaction problems is presented. An arbitrary ocean system is analyzed by separating its structural dynamics from its hydrodynamics and, thus, the excitation from the response. The treatment is analogous to that of the acoustical transponder. A detailed discussion of the exciting forces on a vertical pile in a directional seaway is made. Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) is introduced as a simplified procedure for the estimation of system response. The relevant SEA parameters are identified. The SEA model is compared to the general procedure for the case of a large diameter surface buoy in order to determine its applicability. It is then applied to a "dynamically" similar offshore platform in order to determine the important response parameters. The general procedure is also presented for a small diameter spar buoy although no SEA solution may be obtained. The buoy heave analysis computer program listing is given.
