PERFORMANCE OF THIN PAVEMENTS CONTROL SECTION 2-9

Recently, the trend in Saskatchewan has been to use light pavement structures where traffic volumes are low in place of conventional full-thickness structures. With respect to Saskatchewan conditions, there is little or no literature on the design of light pavement structures, even though staged pavements have been used in one form or another for approximately twenty years. To gain information on performance of light pavements, a test section was constructed on CS 2-9, between Arm River and Holdfast using both full-depth hot-mix asphalt concrete and equalivant sealed granular base course alternates. Sixteen different structures were constructed on 15 km of scarified till subgrade. This highway was chosen because it is representative of the predominant subgrade soil and carries typically low traffic volumes (ADT of 400). The test section will be monitored with respect to performance and an assessment made to provide information for use in design of light pavements. /Author/
