RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AT THE TEXAS TRANSPORTATION INSTITUTE ON SULPHUR-ASPHALT AND RECYCLED PAVEMENT SYSTEMS

This paper discusses two of the more significant on-going research programs being conducted by the Highway Materials Division of the Texas Transportation Institute by investigating means of using elemental sulphur in asphaltic concrete mixtures. Initial studies were directed to sand-asphalt-sulphur mixes using poorly graded beach sands. The use of sulphur in sulphur-asphalt blends is also being studied as a means of reducing asphalt demand. Research projects are discussed in which properties of sulphur-asphalt mixes are compared with conventional asphaltic concretes. Comparisons of two systems are made on the basis of rutting potential, fatigue cracking and serviceability index under a variety of climatic conditions using a linear viscoelastic stress analysis capacity.
