WHAT PRICE SPEED? IN INTERNATIONAL MARINE TRANSPORTATION. AN ANALYTICAL APPROACH

What is the "price" of speed in international marine transportation? Can the preferences of cargo shippers for faster delivery times be quantified? How should the ship owner/operator determine the "optimum" service speed for his fleet of vessels? These are a few of the critical questions that must be answered in order to enhance the efficiency of our nation's trade and commerce while improving the profitability and competitive position of our U.S. flag ocean carriers. The objectives of this paper are to review the problem of ship service speed optimization and to recommend an analytical procedure for its solution.
