METHANOL AS A FUEL A SWEDISH NATIONAL INTEREST
The energy crisis of 1973 led to the initiation of work on finding substitutes for crude oil products. A liquid substitute for petrol is required, and methanol appears best for this purpose. Its low energy content is a disadvantage, but its low emission levels and elimination of lead are an advantage. If a 20/80 methanol/petrol mixture is used, about 1 million cubic M methanol will be needed annually. Present annual production in western Europe is 3 M tons. The Swedish methanol development corporation has been formed to investigate the feasibility of using methanol as a motor fuel in Sweden, the object being to make Sweden independent of imported oil. /TRRL/
