TANKER SAFETY AND POLLUTION PREVENTION--SOME QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS, FACTS AND FIGURES

During the course of the preparatory sessions for the Conference on Tanker Safety and Pollution Prevention, a number of requests were received for information and many questions were asked regarding facts and figures germane to the discussion of this subject. In an endeavour to assist delegates to the Conference, the Oil Companies International Marine Forum produced this booklet containing the most frequently requested in formation, together with some tabulations relevant to the discussion of the following questions. (1) How much oil enters the oceans each year? (2) Is this estimate still valid? (3) Of the 6.1 million tons which enters the oceans each year, how much is the result of "normal operation" of tankers? (4) If normal tanker operations account for only 18% of the oil that enters the oceans, where does the rest of it come from? Included in the booklet are extracts from Exxon's long-range outlook for tanker supply and demand.
