THE EFFECT OF PROPELLER WAKE ON THE TOWING OF LARGE STRUCTURES
The force exerted on a towed structure can in some cases be double that of the propeller thrust force involved. This article describes the forces which act upon different bodies at various distances abaft the towing vehicle and the way velocity distribution in propeller wake changes with these varying distances. It is concluded that the forces acting here are far greater than had previously been reckoned with, and are dependent upon the length of the tow rope used and the geometry of the structure under tow. Model tests with properly scaled propeller wake will provide useful data in finding the ideal configuration for tugs engaged in offshore towing operations. Order from: BSRA as No. 46,677.
