USE OF CONCRETE AS A HULL MATERIAL FOR OFFSHORE VESSELS
The Author describes briefly the various construction methods used for ferrocement, reinforced and prestressed concrete pontoons, barges, ships, and floating docks. Details are given for a variety of floating vessels and the special characteristics of concrete as a shipbuilding material are listed. Reference is made to the problem areas of impact, abrasion, and hull weight. It is concluded that concrete has major advantages over other hull materials for vessels carrying special cargoes such as LNG, for fishing boats, and where high durability and low maintenance are critical economic factors in their operation. The paper is supplemented with a comprehensive list of references for further and more detailed study of design, construction, and operational features of concrete hulls.
