OFFSHORE STRUCTURES IN ICE
The main concern of offshore oil and gas technology in Arctic regions is that of ice forces acting on the structures, and the problem has been investigated by model- and full-scale tests. From the results, an empirical formula has been developed for predicting ice forces on vertical piles, which takes into account pile diameter, ice thickness, shape of structure, velocity, and the mechanical properties of the ice. A distinction has been made between indentation and penetration. The validity of the formula has been established for slender piles up to 2 m wide. For broader structures, the effects of gravity, inertia and friction must be considered in addition to the breaking forces. Work is being carried out at HSVA on this subject, applying the results of ice-breaker studies. Order from: BSRA as No. 46,818.
