SHIP RESISTANCE IN HOMOGENEOUS ICE FIELDS
In Chapter I the basic concept of the division of the total resistance in ice is explained. The grouping of the various resistances is justified not only in the ground of their different physical characteristics but also on the ground of the different simulation laws that apply to each group. Chapter II presents a description of the ship models and the model ice. It contains a full discussion of the development of the lines of the six models that were used in the systematic tests. The use of triangular paraffin wax sectors to simulate the broken ice-field is justified on practical as well as theoretical grounds. In Chapter III the physical lay-out of the test facilities and a typical test run are described. The matrix that was used for the data recording is provided. Included in this chapter also are six contours, in which the results of the systematic tests are plotted as resistance per ton displacement versus Froude's number. The concluding Chapter IV deals with the application of the model tests for full scale application. Three standard calculation sheets are provided for the step-by-step computation of the performance of a ship in the ice field. Added to these sheets is a numerical example in which a comparison is made with the full-scale data of the T.S. Manhattan voyage through the Northwest Passage in 1970.
