DEEP WATER POSITION MEASURING SYSTEM FOR DYNAMICALLY POSITIONED SHIPS
This paper describes the performance of a position determination system which measures the slope of the marine riser at both the base and drill ship attachment points and uses these data together with a suitable algorithm to compute the vessel position. Computer analyses have shown that position errors of 1 percent or less of water depth can be obtained in water depths of 1829 M(6000 ft). The technique avoids the heavy cable, winch and cable tensioner required by taut wire systems and is not susceptible to the acoustic dropout problems of an acoustic system.
