COLD RECYCLING OF PAVEMENT BY HAMMERMILL PROCESS

This report describes a method of cold recycling old pavement by using a traveling hammermill. Three contracts were awarded in 1975 in the State of Maine that required the recycling of pavement. One contract on Route 9 in Townships 28 and 22 MD required that the old roadway be recycled and the material be used as a base course on the new road at the new location. As this road was relocated, no data was obtained pertaining to the condition of the original road. The second contract specified that one mile of pavement on I-95 in Etna-Carnel be recycled. In this case 12 inches of material was recycled and was used at the same project site. The third contract required that various sections on Route 17 in Washington roadway to a proper cross section. Information learned from these projects revealed that the material has a high stability when tested according to bituminous testing procedures. These results also indicated there was a question relative to material performance because of frost and water susceptibility. These problems were borne out and verified from the field observations which indicated rutting and some signs of distress in the wheel paths in the spring after one winter season's traffic. Exploratory type laboratory testing revealed that the addition of 4 percent emlusified asphalt helped to make a more waterproof mixture and hopefully provide a more durable product. From the information learned both in the field and from laboratory testing, and the corrections applied to these projects, it is hoped that a durable well performing product was produced.
