The groups most frequently affected by accidents occurring in built-up areas are children, the elderly, young cyclists and private motorists. The study outlines each of these so-called problem groups individually, represents specific group characteristics relating to traffic environment and deals with statements concerning traffic experiences and behaviour. It also quotes the numerical accident frequency statistics relevant to numerous sub-groups. Finally measures of primary importance to future work in the area of traffic safety are mentioned. In addition the study compares the behaviour of various problem groups. Tables represent the type and severity of the accident involvement for all four problem groups and are indexed according to age group. They provide a general perspective of the long term development of accident occurrence. /TRRL/
