LINEAR HEAT-FLOW AND THERMAL STRESS ANALYSIS OF CONCRETE BRIDGE DECKS
The report describes a computer program, multitherm, for the linear heat flow and thermal stress analysis of concrete bridge decks. Using the program the influence of various parameters such as section shape, wind speed, ambient temperature and blacktop thickness, on the thermal response of concrete bridges is investigated. On the basis of conservative thermal conditions, a new design gradient is proposed as a replacement for the sixth power 30 deg C gradient used in New Zealand. The proposed gradient is likely to result in a reduction in the critical soffit tension stresses for continuous prestressed concrete bridges so reducing the required level of prestress with consequential economic advantages. /TRRL/
