STATIC AND REPETITIVE LOADING TESTS ON FULL-SCALE PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BRIDGE BEAMS

Crack development, bond breakdown and strand behaviour are reported for three full-scale prestressed concrete bridge beams tested under static and repetitive loading up to collapse. Mean and maximum crack widths are presented. Loads are compared with British Standard Code of Practice CP 110:1972 and with calculations using measured material properties. Strand fatigue failures are discussed and the fatigue behaviour of prestressing strand reviewed. The results indicate that if similar beams were loaded to the limit of class 2 prestressed concrete structures, failures in fatigue could be expected if the number of repetitions of load exceeds 3 x 10 to the power 6. This has implications for the use of partial prestressing. /Author/TRRL/
