ENGINE AND CARGO ROOM AUTOMATION BY MICROCOMPUTERS
In the first part of this paper technical aspects of the Brown-Boveri micro-computer based system DP 290, designed for monitoring and controlling engine and/or cargo rooms, are described. In a second part, the automation of a specific product carrier equipped with two medium-speed main engines and a variable-pitch propeller is presented. This comprises: 1. The DP 290 system monitoring the main propulsion plant, the power generating plant and the auxiliaries. 2. The sub-system ASSP, an automatic system for the remote control of the main propulsion plant, including an automatic load balance system for the two medium-speed Diesel engines. 3. The sub-system ASGP, an automatic system for the electric power generating plant controlling two shaft generators and two auxiliary Diesel generators. In the third and final part of the paper, mention is made of some possibilities to extend the DP 290 system. These include condition monitoring, manoeuvre recording and calculation of hull stresses.
