CONTROL OF SHIP-REPAIR OPERATIONS AT SHIPYARDS

With recent slackening of the market for new ships there is growing competition between shipyards for ship-repair work. Problems involved in the planning and carrying out of ship-repair operations are discussed. Systematic planning is needed to ensure that the whole operation is completed effectively. The operation must be geared to the shipyard's resources as a whole, and the type and extent of procedures involved must be clearly defined. The use of an advance inspection, operations Bar Chart, and daily meetings between parties involved is emphasised, and the need for administration to provide fast and reliable information flow is also stressed.
