CONSTRUCTION OF A COMPREHENSIVE CAUSAL NETWORK. PHASE III: FINAL REPORT (VOLUME 1)
A comprehensive causal network was constructed which gives a conceptual framework for accident-related factors. These factors are presented in graphical and tabular form. A coding scheme was developed to organize factors according to accident element (driver, vehicle, environment, traffic situation, etc.), time (long term and short term factors and events immediately preceding the crash), and hierarchical relationships. Uses of the network are discussed and recommendations for future study given. The construction of the causal network revealed gaps in information on causative factors and interactions--in particular the driver's perception and decision-making processes.
