ADVANCED VEHICLE AND INFRASTRUCTURE SYSTEMS. COMPUTER APPLICATION, CONTROL AND AUTOMATION. CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION TO INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEMS
As an introduction to the following chapters, this chapter provides a basic understanding of intelligent transport systems (ITS). The history of ITS developments in Europe is traced with brief descriptions of PROMETHEUS and DRIVE. Similar accounts are given of US and Japanese initiatives. Elements of ITS are then briefly discussed in the fields of a) traffic management and control, b) public transport and freight operation systems, c) mobile telecommunications systems, d) debitting and smart card systems, e) user information systems and f) advanced vehicle safety systems.
