AROUND THE WORLD IN ITS DAYS

In June 1997, ITS America completed its new analysis of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) worldwide, updating its previous analysis made in 1993. As before, ITS progress in the USA, Japan, and Europe was systematically compared by system type, such as advanced traveller information systems (ATIS), and by funding and organisation, research and development, system architecture, standardisation, deployment and benefits, institutional issues, and marketing and future plans. ITS are also surveyed in 35 additional countries, especially Australia, Canada and South Korea. The most significant recent ITS progress in the USA has been the completion of its National ITS Architecture and the shift in programme emphasis from operational tests to deployment initiatives. There has also been good progress in developing ITS standards to ensure national compatibility and interoperability for the architecture's 30 user services. How far ITS will be used will depend strongly on the not yet settled ITS provisions of new transport laws. There is much stronger cooperation between the five ministries and agencies sharing Japan's ITS responsibilities. There has been successful extended ITS research and product development in the European Union's centralised programmes. European countries are developing individual international standards.
