THE USE OF THE HYBRID SMART CAR IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Contact smart cards have been used for many years, and are today well-established in several environments including banking. The latest step in the evolution of smart cards is the hybrid contact/contactless smart card, whose controller and microprocessor provides the high security level required for banking. Such cards, in contactless mode, can be used for public transport ticketing applications, where fast transaction times are required. The city of Valenciennes in France will be the first to implement such a smart card, for use in both public transport and parking; the cards will be used in urban and suburban bus services, local trains, and car parks. The system will consist of: (1) on-board equipment, such as driver consoles and combined hybrid/magnetic card validators; (2) hybrid smart cards, together with on-station added value machines using cash or debit-credit cards; and (3) portable and stationary parking meters, and a central system to clear transactions. The system will begin to be implemented in the third quarter of 1997, on 280 buses, on trains and in 20 stations, and at 11 depots and 125 shops.
