ACTIVE ISOLATION OF MACHINE FOUNDATIONS BY IN-FILLED TRENCH BARRIERS. DISCUSSION
A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by T.M. Al-Hussaini and S. Ahmad, published in this journal (Volume 122, Number 4, April 1996), is presented. The discussion presents information on a type of geosynthetic product called geofoam that has proven useful as a vibration barrier in actual applications. While there are several geofoam materials that might be used for this purpose, many projects have used a plastic foam called expanded polystyrene (EPS), which can be manufactured with a density as low as approximately 10 kg/cu m.
