STRAIN LOCALIZATION AND UNDRAINED STEADY STATE OF SAND. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE
A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by R.J. Finno, W.W. Harris, M.A. Mooney, and G. Viggiani, published in this journal (Volume 122, Number 6, June 1996), is presented. While the original study investigated the effect of shear band on the undrained behavior of loose sand under plane strain conditions, the discussers examined the undrained volume change in triaxial tests on sand, the quasi-steady state behavior, and the limitation of triaxial tests on sands. The discussion compares the results of the two studies, focusing on volume changes in type B behavior, differences between type A and type B behaviors, and occurrence of shear bands. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.
