SHOTCRETE SPECIFICS FOR SEDRUN

This article describes the construction work on the Sedrun section of the project for constructing the Gotthard Main Tunnel in Switzerland. The project began in May 1996, and is working on external facilities, shaft installations, and the Sedrun Tunnel itself. The key to the whole complex is an 800m deep 7.75m diameter shaft, to which access is gained by a 990m long adit on one side, and a combined adit and vertical shaft on the other. The Sedrun complex is a critical part of the whole project, because it provides access to the four starting points for the main phase of tunnelling. Construction Lot 350 covers the construction of the first part of the complex, and is scheduled for completion by the end of 1998; its tunnelling uses conventional drill+blast techniques. Design specifications for the support of its underground works include provision of about 13,000 cubic m of wet-mix shotcrete, 18,000 rockbolts, 190t of structural steel, 7000 cubic m of cast concrete, and 110t of reinforcement. The excavation walls will be covered by about 45,000 square m of steel-fibre-reinforced shotcrete. The contract has not yet been awarded for Lot 351, which consists of the main Sedrun shaft, providing access to the main tunnel elevation, and the shaft bottom installations. Completion of the whole complex is expected by 2001 or 2002.
